West African section – djembe / dundun
In these courses you will learn to play the most popular
West African drums: djembe and dundun. We teach traditional rhythms from Guinea,
Mali, Senegal and Burkina Faso which constitute the essence of musical culture
in their countries of origin. In our classes, you will also learn some elements
of contemporary drum and percussion music – the fruit of the evolution
of West African musical tradition lasting for centuries.
Monday courses are dedicated to selected West African rhythms that are
currently best known and most popular among djembe students in Europe. These
rhythms form the alphabet of djembe music education. The knowledge of djembe
accompaniments, arrangements and dundun parts will enable you to play
together with other people from Poland and Europe. These courses will also
prepare you to perform in an ensemble, and those of you who have already studied
djembe music will find an opportunity to refresh and consolidate their
knowledge.
The rhythms we will be teaching in the near future are: Sorsornet, Macru,
Yankadi, Djole, Soko.
Afro-Cuban section – conga
We teach traditional Cuban technique of conga drumming. Based on relatively
easy rhythms from all over the world, steadily developed technique will
eventually let you move on to more advanced and difficult Cuban repertoire.
What is also important is to understand how the conga parts interact
with other instruments in a Latin percussion ensemble.
That is why in our classes you will also find such instruments as clave,
guiro, bongo drums, bata, timbales or maracas. You will learn about the
incredibly rich musical culture of Latin America by playing some of its
styles, such as: merengue, "salsa" (son, bolero, guaracha, songo, pilon,
mozambique), bomba, plena, comparsa/conga, rumba, toques de bata.
Afro-Brazilian section – batucada
These courses will familiarize you with the instruments of Brazilian street
samba, such as: surdo, caixa, agogo or chocallo. Apart from traditional
Brazilian rhythms, we also introduce a variety of rhythms from other parts
of the world. The rhythmic parts played together in perfect time deliver a
powerful musical impact and release great amounts of energy. Basic forms
combined with frequent unison breaks develop your sense of rhythm, precision,
and group work.
