Audiovisual presentations

We offer slideshows and video presentations recounting our travels to Africa, Cuba, and Brazil. We present a wide variety of instruments originating from these cultures, demonstrate their sounds, and talk about their corresponding musical traditions, with particular focus on festive ceremonies that involve drumming and dancing. Between the talks we entertain you with live drum and dance shows or mini-workshops for volunteers among the audience.

West Africa

In the early 13th century king Sundiata Keita formed the splendid Empire of Mali. Mande culture is still vividly present in the area where the Empire had stretched in its prime. The griots or jaliw — a hereditary caste of musicians, oral historians and learned poets — cultivate knowledge of culture and past events of the nations that formed the Mali federation.

Cuba

Rumba came into existence in a melting pot of cultures. It combines drum music, singing in Spanish, and courtship dance in which two dancers play a seduction game.

Brazil

(...) Stimulated by the influence of European instrument inventory, the grand Brazilian percussion orchestra known as batucada was formed. Its rhythms evolved from African music and are inseparable from spectacular and energetic Carnival dance – the samba.
